Marijuana Activists Fight for Moms’ Support

May 26th, 2010    Posted by: admin

There’s no denying that drug and alcohol addiction is a serious problem in the United States today. While there are strides being made in public awareness and treatment methods, there are still far too many people who find that they need to go to alcohol or drug rehab each year. And yet, it’s in this environment that the debate about legalizing marijuana is taking place. There are strong arguments on both sides of the platform, with valid concerns coming forth about how beneficial legalizing marijuana could be for the struggling economy and how wider availability could lead to an increase in the need for drug treatment. Pro- marijuana activists are currently trying to reach out to a group that, if enlisted, could add significant weight to their cause Who makes up this group Mothers.

Moms across the country have had significant influence on national policy regarding addictive substances in the past. After all, what parent wants to see their child suffering the ravages of alcohol or drug addiction? Mothers were one of the major voices in the nation that lead to the passing of Alcohol Prohibition — and later, the repeal of the act. They were also responsible for the tougher laws regarding drunk driving that are now on the books. It would seem that enlisting the help of these mothers for legalizing marijuana would be a hard sell. However, activists argue that pot is less of a danger to kids across the nation than alcohol or prescription drug abuse is.

The activist website for the group Moms4Marijuana has received thousands of hits. Some of the arguments that the group and other activists posit are that alcohol is worse than pot, pot can ease postpartum depression, and teenagers shouldn’t face time in jail for experimenting with marijuana.

It will likely be a while yet before the battle over marijuana is decided. However, it is a good possibility that moms across the nation will have a say in which way the nation goes. Hopefully, whatever the outcome, it won’t result in more drug rehab facility visits for our country’s precious youth.

Viagra Increases the Risk of Hearing Impairment Twofold

Taking Viagra or any other similar medication for erectile dysfunctions could increase your chances of hearing loss, according to a new study carried out in the US. This new development also adds to the warning made in 2007 by the Food and Drug Administration regarding this very side effect.
Testing carried out on mice showed hearing impairment following fairly high doses of Viagra, although the effect it has on humans has been sketchy, until now.

Based on a sample of American men over the age of 40 - one in six of them did not take substances similar to Viagra and suffered from a hearing impairment. Out of the men who did take Viagra and other similar drugs, one in three suffered from hearing loss. Gerald McGwin, epidemiologist, University of Alabama, Birmingham School of Public Health said that the factors did point to the fact that men suffering from hearing impairment were more likely to take Viagra. This however, McGwin said, needed further research for confirmation.

The findings of the study are featured in the journal - Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck surgery.

All these products made to target erectile dysfunctions already carry a warning against potential hearing impairment. However, the results of this study makes this concern even more serious, says Dr. James E. Saunders who is an ear doctor attached to the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Centre in New Hampshire. He elaborated, saying that earlier, the focal point had been on immediate hearing loss. The study now suggests that a gradual loss of hearing could take place.

He advised that those already suffering from hearing loss should not take Viagra or any other similar drugs.

The Ideal Addiction Treatment Program

May 15th, 2010    Posted by: publisher

The cycle of addiction and recovery continues to occur in any person’s life until the treatment delivered is completely effective. Hence, finding an addiction treatment program that can help the person deal with the problem away from the environment that causes him or her to slide back into it as well as when he completes his addiction therapy and is ready to come back to meet the temptation of the addiction that awaits him.

For most people, drug rehab has become a way to get attention, especially celebrities who never seem to recover from habits they should have dropped a long time ago. So what is an ideal addiction treatment program?

Firstly, for those who are concerned about their loved one (the addict) have to, in most cases, take him to a place that offers him complete solace from the deadly habit that he or she has become so dependent on. That’s the first and most vital step!

Secondly, each addiction program has activities that cater to each individual specifically according to his or her needs. Now these activities can range from individual to group therapy, physical activities that cater to both the body and the mind of the patient at the addiction center. Cirque Lodge conducts one such drug rehab program that offers all these activities along with outdoor activity, thanks to its location.

Thirdly, the extent of stay of the patient depends on the severity of his or her addiction and this decision lies in the hands of the able professional who determines when the patient can leave and continue his de-addiction with an aftercare plan.

After all, it’s in the best interests of the patient to get it right the first time.

What is an implant tooth?

In movies that do not use verbal humor but non-verbal, almost every time the idea of a missing tooth causes laughter among the audience. Whether it is the proverbial Charlie Chaplin for adults or the Looney Tunes cartoons for kids, it seems like a dental payment plan is of no consequence to these chirpy and fun-loving fictional critters.

However, in the real world, things are a bit different in similar circumstances when a person is missing a tooth that can lead to much embarrassment. Gone are the days when one will wait all night for the tooth fairy to leave her little gift and instead, a doctor’s appointment is made to obtain an implant tooth.

Well, the truth is that taking care of your teeth is important, and can’t be put off until the time when the need for implants is required. But for those who have lost teeth, the root that once held the tooth in place is also lost. And this leads to bone resorption which is better avoided in the long run, not unless you are comfortable living on a liquid diet.

So, for most people in this category who have neglected the aspect of dental care, the implant denture works wonders. In fact, an implant tooth is the only solution for those who need to consider a restoration procedure for their teeth.

All the same, it doesn’t hurt to not take yourself so seriously while flashing your pearly whites and even one of them are missing. Well, what do you know… there’s humor in that too!

Pregnant Women Do Not Get Adequate Amounts Of Vitamin D

May 7th, 2010    Posted by: admin

A study recently published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology states that seven out of ten pregnant women in the US do not get enough Vitamin D. Prenatal vitamins usually prescribed during pregnancy do raise the level of Vitamin D, but the study indicates that a higher dosage might be necessary.

The lead author of this study, Adit Ginde, MD, MPH, University of Colorado, Denver School of Medicine said that it is a known fact that Vitamin D helps towards building up a mother’s and infant’s bone health, but said the study was just the basis of finding out its additional health benefits during pregnancy.

The study indicates that a majority of pregnant women in the US had inadequate levels of Vitamin D - calling for higher dosages. Those at a higher risk of having insufficient levels of Vitamin D were women who covered their skin for religious reasons, those with darker skins and also those who lived further up north during the winter.

Ginde also said that it was probably a better idea for women to start taking prenatal vitamins a couple of months prior to getting pregnant. He said this would provide much better health benefits, as opposed to starting only after becoming pregnant.

A drop in outdoor activity is what has lead to growing evidence of inadequate Vitamin D levels. Vitamin D is an essential factor towards the health of a mother and her baby. A lack of Vitamin D during infancy can lead to wheezing and other respiratory illnesses. In adults, it has been known to be linked to certain types of cancer and even cardiovascular diseases.
