Roe of Marine Animals is Best Natural Source of Omega 3

Friday, December 18th, 2009

While marine animals are known to be a good source of Omega 3, it has recently been found that the roe or eggs of marine animals contain especially high levels of these essential fatty acids. Researchers from the University of Almeria recently studied the roe of 15 marine animals. They discovered that Omega 3 is present in the roe of all the species studied. The findings have been published in the European Journal of Lipid Science and Technology.

The nutritional aspects of roe have never been previously studied up until now. Results of this study show that while Omega 3 is present in all the marine animals studied, it is especially plentiful in the roe of the following marine animals: the Atlantic bonito, mackerel, squid, cuttlefish, lumpsucker, hake, and salmon. Research was focused on eicosapentaenoic acids (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acids (DHA), two specific types of Omega 3. Over 30% of the fatty acids in the 15 marine animals studied were found to be one of these two types.

EPA and DHA are essential components of a healthy diet; inadequate intake is associated with many diseases and conditions, including cardiovascular disease. Due to the high levels found in roe of marine animals, very little consumption is required to meet the body’s needs. José Luis Guil Guerrero, director of this study and a researcher in the Food Technology Department of the UAL, explains that possibilities for the use of these findings include extracting the oil from the roe for use in the development of a nutritional supplement.

How to prevent a mini-stroke from becoming a problem

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

Close to 200,000 Americans experience a ministroke, also referred to as a Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). These warning strokes lead to almost one-third of that statistic having full strokes later. Fortunately, TIA’s can be treated and prevented.

Here is what happens with a TIA: when the brain loses its blood supply, it tries to restore the blood flow. If restored, the affected brain cells resume their normal functions, which, means the affected body parts are back to normal. TIA usually last for fewer than ten minutes, and the symptoms are temporary, as opposed to a stroke where effects can be permanent. While some consider this a ministroke, it is in all honesty, a stroke that has been resolved or one that has improved functionality to the affected parts of your body.
Keep in mind that TIA’s are warning signs of a possible future stroke. The risk of having a stroke increases dramatically after a TIA. Interestingly, a TIA might find an opportunity to find a source and prevent any permanent neurologic damage.

Once you have experienced a ministroke, lessen the following to avoid the onset of a full stroke. Remove risks such as alcohol and tobacco consumption. Control your diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. A heart healthy diet that lowers cholesterol and triglyceride levels is important. Remember, all of this takes hard work, effort and perseverance - but if followed through properly, will help prevent the narrowing of arteries and the potential for TIA and stroke.

The Benefits of Water

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Water is the stuff of life. It is an essential nutrient without which the human body cannot survive. Most people do not drink enough. Over half of the human body is comprised of water. In order to retain that percentage, eight to twelve glasses of water must be consumed daily. The benefits of doing so are enormous.

Water consumption is essential to the fat loss process. It increases metabolism, and flushes fat byproducts from the system. Water helps in the prevention of kidney stones, which can occur during fat loss, because of toxin buildup. Consumption of this essential liquid can even curb hunger.
Optimal body function can only be maintained by drinking adequate amounts of water every day.

Water is essential for flushing out toxins and keeping the organs healthy. It can battle fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, and even depression. Water has been shown to regulate body temperature, optimize liver and kidney functions, and prevent heart disease. Without the benefits of water acting upon the system, the body cannot function, the brain begins to slow, organs shut down, and even outward appearance deteriorates.

Water creates a youthful appearance. Drinking at least eight to twelve glasses a day hydrates the skin. This diminishes the look of fine lines and wrinkles, and creates a healthy glow. Water plumps lean tissues, making muscles look fuller and better developed. Water in itself is the fountain of youth.
Be it for weight loss, general health, or a more youthful appearance, enjoying the benefits of water can greatly increase the quality of life. Keeping track of water consumption on a daily basis is as important as keeping track of food consumption. Better water consumption habits lead to a better life.

Benefits of Emu Oil

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Although commercial Emu farming for products including pure Emu oil is a fairly recent development, the oil of the Emu is actually a substance that has been used since ancient times. For many millennia, this oil has been considered a source of healing, energy, and life for the Aborigines native to Australia. This reputation is well-deserved–research has shown that the substance possesses anti-inflammatory and natural nourishing properties, making the emu oil product industry both relevant and important to those who are looking for natural health options. Beyond the health studies–which are of course essential but not always an indication of how much actual pain relief and soothing a substance can offer in real-world-use–Emu oil has proven itself to a number of users already, who have found it to provide amazing results for a variety of ailments.

Emu oil is, of course, derived from the fat of the birds, which are native to Australia. The oil has a PH balance that is very similar to human skin. It contains important nutrients such as Omega 3 and Omega 6, essential fatty acids. More importantly, the oil has the ability to penetrate through all five layers of the human epidermis to actually deliver those nutrients.
